Hillary Clinton Promises Drug/Mental Treatment Top Agenda
This country has been facing an epidemic as of late. There has been an uproar from the community at large for those in power to address the substance abuse and mental health issues in this country. Some other candidates just want to talk about how poor Obama is doing.
Hillary Clinton though is focusing on the issues. She has been discussing the more pressing issues at home than most of the other candidates. Odds are we all know someone who has struggled with addiction, or who suffers from a mental illness.
While some candidates talk about how we need to send more troops to fight terror overseas, none discuss how they will help the soldiers with PTSD that experienced that terror when they come home. Many of them even develop substance abuse problems to cope with their mental anguish.
Hillary Clinton is discussing these topics though, and that it is a main part of her campaign from here on.
Hillary Clinton has been hitting the campaign trail hard in New Hampshire and Iowa. She has been going into town hall meetings, and even doing round table discussions with local people. What Hillary Clinton has been hearing the most is the lack of help for those addicted to drugs and with mental illness.
The issue of helping those who suffer from mental illness and or suffering from addiction has been coming up on every stop for Hillary Clinton’s campaign. People are concerned with the obvious disregard for these people who are suffering with these illnesses.
Hillary Clinton had this to say about it:
“I think a lot of people are thinking, well, that’s somebody else’s problem. That’s not my problem. And indeed, it is all of our problem.” “This is not something we can just brush under the rug and wish it would go away.”
Hillary Clinton Addressing The Rise In Drug Abuse And Lack Of Treatment
Heroin has been seeing a huge growth in use around these areas. There is also very little treatment in these areas for people with addiction or mental disorders. Hillary Clinton has even stated that there have been “steady cutbacks” to these treatment programs.
“This is a quiet epidemic,” Hillary Clinton stated. While she was in Iowa, she heard of in-patient treatment facilities that had been totally closed up. Hillary Clinton went on to say “I literally heard from one end of the state, to Davenport to Council Bluffs, about this problem.”
“There was nowhere for people to be sent.” This is the sad facts that Hillary Clinton has been hearing all along her campaign trail. While she has praised the Affordable Care Act requiring insurance plans to cover drug and mental health treatment, she says there could still be more done.
It’s hard to try and use your insurance for treatment when there is no facility available within your coverage area. Or even more so if there’s not one available in the entire state which has and does occur often more times than not.
She has called upon her peers in leadership to provide a more “concerted policy” at a “national, state, local” level. Hillary Clinton would like to see this done not only in the public sector, but the private as well.
Hillary Clinton Wants To Address These Issues, Not Just Politically Redundant Back-And-Forth
Hillary Clinton showing support for an issue that many Americans can relate to is a sigh of relief compared to other candidates. She has decided that drug use and mental illness can no longer be looked at as a criminal issue, but rather a social and health issue instead.
Many who have a drug problem also suffer from some form of mental illness. Unfortunately, many of these people just get locked up and receive no treatment, rather than sending them to a rehabilitation or mental facility where they could be treated properly. Especially in non-violent crimes.
Hillary Clinton sees this and wants to change it. Unfortunately, not enough places exist that can help those in need. And a lack of training isn’t helping those people who have to deal with police. This will be part of Hillary Clinton’s overall plan in addressing these concerns that have effected all of us.
Hillary Clinton isn’t trying to just make buzzwords or sound bites so that she can be noticed. She’s trying to come up with real plans to fix real issues that are affecting all Americans. Speaking about the other candidates, Hillary Clinton has stated:
“If I were just to read briefing books or I were just to engage in the political back-and-forth, would I have heard what a big problem mental health is in New Hampshire?” She thinks not. This is what Hillary Clinton wants to focus on, not just sit and banter, but to actually try to help solve real issues we face.
